About the OAOA

The Overnight Airfreight Operators Association (OAOA) was formed in 1988 by Dick Creak, with the aim of providing a voice for the airfreight industry during a time when Air Navigation and Airport Charges were first proposed.

Since that time the organisation has attracted an impressive list of members, and continues to actively promote the interests of the airfreight industry as a whole. We do this by:
  • providing a forum for the airfreight industry to discuss news and developments;
  • offering a platform for publicly promoting the views of industry stakeholders;
  • participating in government reviews and policy discussion processes;
  • working to enhance the profile of members in Australia and internationally.

Current Issues

Some of the issues and projects that we are currently working on as an organisation include:

  • Domestic and international airfreight security
  • Impact of the introduction of new aircraft and phase-out of obsolete aircraft
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Dangerous goods handling
  • Member training requirements
  • Community demands for aircraft night operational restrictions and curfews at Australian airports

Achievements

Through our continuous activities in the public arena, we are able to play an important role in shaping industry policies and public awareness. Some of our recent achievements include:

  • OAOA was a foundation member of the Dangerous Goods Council (ADGATC) and provided secretarial assistance for two years.
  • OAOA initiated the first low cost Non Dangerous Goods (Correspondence) Acceptance Course.
  • OAOA produced the Australia's Dangerous Goods Awareness Training Videos and Dangerous Goods Safety Charts.
  • At the 1992 Sydney Airport Community Forum, OAOA representations resulted in reductions of certain security and runway charges for BAe 146 dedicated freighters operating in curfew hours.
  • OAOA was directly involved with CASA in the redrafting of CAO 48 Pilot Flight Time Limitations, enhancing operator safety and resulting in reduced costs.
  • OAOA was directly involved in increasing the maximum down–wind component of BAe 146 Freighters at Sydney (in curfew), thus reducing the miss-out factor in marginal downwind conditions.
  • Played a critical role in the redistribution of Ansett Mascot landing slots.
  • Played major role in development of 2005 Aviation Act and Regulation with DoTaRS.
